Kyiv recognizes that it is problematic to accept a country that is at war with the Russian Federation into the Alliance.

Ukraine is seeking a promise to become a NATO member. Kyiv is also counting on additional air defense commitments, the country's representative to the Alliance, Natalia Halibarenko, said on Thursday, July 4, Politico reports.

“We would like allies to secure Ukraine’s irreversible path to NATO membership. We are not asking for anything extraordinary,” she said.

She noted that Kyiv recognizes that it is problematic to accept a country at war with Russia into the Alliance. In addition, Ukraine does not control all of its territory. However, as she emphasized, Ukraine is already counting on additional commitments regarding air defense.

Politico writes that some countries, such as the United States and Germany, are “cool” about a quick membership offer, while others, closer to the front lines with Russia, want Ukraine’s future status in NATO to be clearly spelled out.

According to Halibarenko, Ukraine understands everything, and therefore concludes security agreements with individual countries. But the goal remains unchanged – NATO.

“We have made it clear at various levels that the invitation will not disappear from our agenda,” said Halibarenko.
